“DC! RG! DC! RG!” The chants by the announcers and crowd as the Derby City Roller Girls are about take their last jam of the season Friday night at Champs Rollerdrome filled the room. DCRG played a grey vs. black game in their last bout of the 2018 season on June 23rd. Smiles can be seen worn by every single DCRG member as the bout was a close call throughout its entirety.
Unfortunately this season was a short one due to scheduling and reffing issues, but they played against the Lansing Derby Vixens, Burning River Roller Derby, and this last bout against themselves. With both A team and B team players mixed amongst the grey team and the black team, the black team won the night with a score of
Luckily, there was only one injury throughout the bout. Players take a knee if someone goes down, and thankfully claps filled the room as Kimfandango was able to get to the bench and take a breather. Derby injuries are no joke, you guys. I can attest to that. I’m so glad you’re okay, Kimmie!
There several highlights throughout the game. You can hear, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” as E2 Brute jumps the apex in an attempt to get past the pack to score some points. Shortly after, with 13 minutes left in the second half, an official review is called by the Grey team awarding them two points. Slamus Aran, usually a blocker, goes in as the Jammer as the sound of Mario coins fills the air — good one, DJ Bombshell! In complete shock, Slamus manages to snag lead jammer and gets the team two more points! The night was full of excitement and all around good fun.
