There was quite a bit of buzz around town a few months ago when Louisville hired Chris Mack as their new head basketball coach, but since then there hasn’t been much of anything to fan those flames of excitement. Given the state of the program and the uncertainty of its future, no one was sure of what to expect from this brand new staff, especially on the recruiting trail. After a few months of crickets, Mack has at last reeled in his first catch of his young Cardinal career, and whew baby it’s a whopper.
At the end of last month, 2019 star shooting guard Josh Nickelberry out of Northwood Temple Academy in Fayetteville, North Carolina committed to to Louisville, and as news hit social media, we as a fanbase collectively let out a sigh of relief. Noted for his speed and outstanding shooting ability behind the arc, the 6-4, 175 pound Nickelberry, from Northwood Temple Academy in Fayetteville NC, chose Louisville over Auburn, Connecticut, Michigan, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and others. According to 247sports, he is currently ranked 55 overall and is the number 6 shooting guard in the country.
Nickelberry’s commitment is viewed by many as the glimmer of hope for Louisville’s future — if Chris Mack can lure him in with the surrounding circumstances, then maybe he can turn this shit storm around sooner than later. The new Cardinal won’t be in uniform until the season after next giving us something to look forward to while watching his senior season next year.
