REVIEW: Rob Lee – “Art of Flight”

Rob Lee
Art of Flight

Art of Flight is the long awaited debut album from Rob Lee — long awaited because we’ve heard him on his single “Monday Morning” as well as his feature on the latest RMLLW2LLZ record, but not much more. After listening to the album, it’s easy to see why we had to wait for it; it’s apparent that Lee wanted to get it right and that’s what he did.

The engineering and production from Robert “Saint” Calloway is absolutely professional. While none of the beats are groundbreaking or mind blowing, every track is a smooth head-bobbing jam. Stylistically, the album weaves in and out of R&B, soul, dance, hip-hop, and sometimes beyond those genres while always holding true to Rob’s soulful style.

The standout tracks on this album all have features from some of our favorite local emcees — “Replay (feat. RMLLW2LLZ)” is an absolute banger that has vibes like Trey Songz. You’ll recognize other locals Jordan Jetson, Peter Wesley, and BrxtnKori Black’s feature on the track “Voicemail” is the moment on the album when you realize both of these artists have “it.” The track is catchy, sleek, and sexy. Rob and Kori together are money.

Art of Flight is a textbook R&B album for 2018, and while it doesn’t take many risks, it manages to absolutely nail the vibe that it’s going for. Rob Lee’s style is just right for fans of Trey Songs, Chris Brown, or Omarion
