There is something deeply captivating about the found sound ephemera and airy synths that drives the compositional work of Bret Berry. On Environments, Berry gives equal attention to field recordings and synth work, weaving in disparate beats here and there that seem neither married to time nor space. Where a lot of collage based (or at least influenced) compositional work can seem cacophonous and lacking focus, Environments serves as a bit of a cypher, a puzzle to be unlocked and contemplated over repeat listens. Berry’s work demands reflection and gives you the space to process those smaller moments as they happen, without losing any of the dynamic flow of the movement.
