22 year old emcee yungsoda’s “Picante,” uses cadence and rhythmic bars to substitute as a drum track. Minimal production is on the rise, citing Roc Marciano’s recent Rosebud’s Revenge is the most recent critically acclaimed example of artists pushing hip hop further into the direction of production without heavy drums. “Picante,” most readily plays like a spoken word piece. The angst created by how a love interest makes him feel with the bipolar pairings of “breaking/fixing,” “loving/killing” are examples of how yungsoda creates a theme bound by tension inside his stream of consciousness.
