Rare is the day that we get to talk about the Golden Girls on this site, but here we are. The sweet news is that you can talk about the Golden Girls tomorrow night all while helping Girls Rock Louisville. Here’s the deal: to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Golden Girls, the rad folks at Girls Rock Louisville and the Night Train Lounge are hosting a trivia night at Kaiju centered around your favorite sassy ladies, replete with sassy drinks and a costume contest so that you can all be your inner Blanche (because seriously, she’s hte one that knows how to party the hardest). Donations are requested with the proceeds going to helping fund GRL do all the awesome that they do. We caught up with event coordinator Jordan Martin to ask about her involvement in the event, what constitutes a Golden Girls themed drink, and which Golden Girl she’d want on her side in a fight!
Never Nervous: How did you come to work with Girls Rock Louisville? How did you become involved? What makes it awesome?
Jordan Martin: I got involved with Girls Rock Louisville (or GRL, as I like to call it) earlier last year. I joined a class at UofL that was led by Carrie Neumayer, who founded the local GRL, and Diane Pecknold. The class did a lot of research around helping GRL to grow into what it is today, and after the class was over I was so sad! I couldn’t leave GRL behind. Everyone involved has so much heart and they work together – it’s really inspiring to be a part of.
NN: So what inspired a Golden Girls theme night fundraiser? Why the Golden Girls?
JM: The Golden Girls was so revolutionary for its time, and still is. Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia were strong, sassy, and unafraid to engage in some really tough conversations — they’re a perfect fit for Girls Rock Louisville.
“Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia were strong, sassy, and unafraid to engage in some really tough conversations.”
NN: What is your favorite episode of the Golden Girls?
JM: Oh wow. Where to begin.
NN: What does the funds raised go towards?
JM: All funds raised will go to furthering GRL’s mission, to inspire and engage girls and gender non-conforming youth. This year the proceeds will go towards our week-long summer program, which runs from June 12-17th.
NN: What constitutes a Golden Girls themed drink? I have to know.
JM: You know, Cheesecake martinis are a thing. I’m just saying.
NN: You’re in a fight and can pick one GG to back you. Who is it and why?
JM: Dorothy. She would be clever enough to get us out of the situation. Plus, she’s super tall and could use her intimidating teacher voice.
“Everyone in the GRL community is supportive, open-minded, and excited about what we’re doing and what is to come.”
NN: Philosophically speaking, what local bands best represent the ideals of the Golden Girls and why?
JM: Ah! That is such a good question! Collectively speaking, I’m gonna have to cheat and say the bands at Girls Rock. The showcase at the end of the week always blows me away. The campers bring their energy together and it’s so cool to watch.
NN: What do you hope to see at this year’s Girls Rock Louisville? What have you taken away in the past?
JM: I would love to see a packed house at Headliner’s for our showcase this year! We are so excited and thankful for all of the local businesses that have supported the GRL family. More than anything, what I have taken away is a feeling of community – everyone in the GRL community is supportive, open-minded, and excited about what we’re doing and what is to come.
