State Champion have a new album coming out soon, and it’s boss. Well, boss makes it seem like it wears a bandana and gets rowdy, which is true sometimes, but also kind of undercuts the gentleness of a lot of the tracks on the album. There first single, or first to my knowledge, is “Don’t Leave Home Without My Love,” a track that perfectly illustrates both the thick Americana riffage and earnest lyrical content beautiful. This sounds like May in Kentucky, where the sun is warm, but not too hot, and you drink golden beers with your pals on a porch or in a front yard somewhere, aimlessly talking about whatever ephemera pops into your skull at the moment. You hear State Champion and immediately think of mesh trucker hats, lawn chairs, and a nice breeze.
From experience, I can tell you that the whole record plays this way, an easy listen with plenty of good vibes. I don’t mind writing that sentence out, if only to spread more of the same: get these good vibes, bay-bee! It’s a solid follow up to “Deep Shit,” and a wonderful addition to the canon of local music. Check out “Don’t Leave Home Without My Love” below, or be an asshole and ignore it.
