“Have you ever heard nine hits in a row?” That’s how Prince started his show. A valid question, I’m not sure if I have. Maybe when Outkast played Forecastle last year? Either way, after last night I still haven’t heard nine in a row, unless FUNKNROLL becomes Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL’s newest hit.
The first nine he played were in this order, “Let’s Go Crazy,” Take Me With U,” “U Got The Look,” “FUNKNROLL,” “Controversy,” “1999,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Nothing Compares 2 U,” and “Kiss.” Prince and 3RDEYEGIRL did their absolute best to pack in every hit they could in an hour and a half. My only complaint is that there wasn’t more time. I would have loved to hear more of the new stuff.
3RDEYEGIRL is a stellar band. Prince played into Hannah Ford’s Louisville heritage by giving her a drum solo on just about every other song. The crowd ate it up. She’s one of the tastiest drummers I’ve ever seen live. Her solo’s sounded like something you would see from an 80’s metal drummer, but once the band came back in you forgot she was there. She simply played what was right for the song while still making them her own.
The standout performances were the slowed down, guitar shred-worthy versions of “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Little Red Corvette.” The latter beginning with Prince teasing that he would sing, then waving it off and walking away. He’s such an amazing performer that sometimes what he doesn’t do is the coolest part. When he finally did make it to the mic on “Little Red Corvette,” he simply did his signature shrill “ooowwww” that drives all the women wild. Then he walked away again. The crowd was begging for more.
We were all wanting more after he ended the night like a guitar god on “Purple Rain.” There wasn’t a person in the building who, given the free time and money, wouldn’t have went to all four shows this weekend.
