Over the course of their very short career, XOX have managed to evolve from a particularly Dischord sound, like Nation of Ulysses or Fugazi meets The Jesus Lizard, they now have a much more, well… shit… I don’t know. Gone are the grinding guitars or frantic drums from before, replaced now by spaced out synth work, and enormous drum sounds. Their singer Jason sounds like an angry Mark Lanegan, flexing his leathery vocals against a dense and sometimes nauseating, albeit strangely appealing wash of synth sounds, and a tight rhythm section. If Promise Quickly is a sign of things to come then we’re all in for a treat. And I believe you’ll be able to hear more soon, with the release of the upcoming Gubbey Records comp, so buy that and shit.
